Tutankhamun is one of the most famous Egyptian pharaohs of all time. He became Pharaoh when he was only nine years old! He was nicknamed 'The Boy King'. He died when he was only 18 years old. He was pharaoh for only 9 years, so why is he so famous? He is famous because of his spectacular discovery in 1922 by an archaeologist called Howard Carter.
At the time, searching for Ancient Egyptian tombs was very popular. Egypt was part of the British empire, and many British archaeologists went to Egypt searching. A place called 'The Valley of the Kings' is where many of the Pharaohs were buried in tombs. By 1914 most people believed that all the tombs had been found. A man called Howard Carter disagreed. He was determined to find his tomb. After years and years of searching he finally found the first step that led down to the tomb. When he finally got inside, he couldn't believe what he saw.
